A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Minimizing Total Tardiness on a Single Machine with Family Setups

The family scheduling problems involve multiple job types where jobs are classified into specific families by their similarity characteristics. Within this class of problems, the single machine family scheduling problem to minimize total tardiness is at least binary NP-Hard. In this paper, we consider the case where jobs in the same family need not be processed together and develop a hybrid genetic algorithm for its solution. Empirical results show that the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm is relatively more effective in minimizing total tardiness than a heuristic algorithm developed by combining several existing algorithms for scheduling problems. Finally, the paper describes some fruitful directions for future research.
